RA Based on Tattoos?

I saw this interesting little tidbit on the American Libraries Magazine website. Readers' Advisory based on a patron tattoos?! Why not?!

  1. YES! Oh my gosh. I love it when people ask me about my tattoos, and I love hearing about other people's tattoos. This is unassailably cool (if that's even a thing- I think I just made up that word). This makes me wish I actually saw my patrons in person, although I'm going to guess that most of my over 90 crowd doesn't sport too much ink. In any case, this makes me so happy. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Ha ha! You might be surprised! My 87 year old dad had lots of tattoos from his stint in the Navy during the Korean war. Don't discount ALL those older folks. If you see an older guy wearing a veteran hat, check out his arms. The tats may be faded but I'd bet he'd be willing to talk about them.

I lost my dad last July. For Father's Day this year, I'm getting a replica of one of the barn swallow tattoos that he had on his chest. For sailors, each barn swallow symbolizes 5,000 nautical miles traveled. He had two. I getting it on my inner wrist because I want to be be able to see it always. I have not traveled 5,000 nautical miles, but I figure as a sailor's daughter, I'm grandfathered in. : )

What tattoos do you have? Do you think they would represent your reading preferences in an RA interview?

  2. I had not seen that article! I love it!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. I immediately want to steal the idea! Not only am I covered in tattoos, I'm the only one at my branch with any so I get a lot of questions about mine. About half are literary. I have the dewey decimal number for Harry Potter on my wrist, a huge forearm piece showcasing my 2 favorite authors (Vonnegut and Bradbury) along with some of their iconic book covers, a death-head moth (silence of the lambs) on my ankle, and more. It's always a good conversation starter!
